“I want to do what is best for kids!” That is Sonya Fuemmeler’s moto in her role as the Glasgow School District as the Elementary Principal. She is a visionary in doing what is best for kids and creating an enriching learning environment. Like many rural schools, the Glasgow district has faced declining enrollment in recent years and a deficit balance. With the forced reduction in staff, in order to reduce expenses, Mrs. Fuemmeler volunteered to take on more responsibilities and more roles to help fill the void. In addition to her duties as principal, Sonya also serves the Glasgow district as the Transportation Director, Food Services Director and the Special Education Director.
Mrs. Fuemmeler is described by one as having all the qualities that make an excellent administrator. She is very outgoing and has a wonderful rapport with everyone she works with. She is very positive and upbeat when visiting with students in her office, and she provides many programs to aid in student development. In doing what is best for kids, Mrs. Fuemmeler has provided student support through such activities/programs as, “Reward Recess for Star Students” -- for students who have presented positive qualities within the classroom and for students’ that pass a rocket in Rocket Math each month. She organized a MAP Club to help students prepare for MAP testing. In the spring, she rewards students that earned Proficient or Advanced on MAP tests.
Mrs. Fuemmeler is very professional with everything she does, as she seeks input from the staff anytime there is a big decision to be made, making everyone feel involved. She is an excellent collaborator and communicator always putting her students and staff at the top of her priority list. Despite facing a deficit balance with a reduction in staff, she addressed each and every challenge as an opportunity for her building and the Glasgow school district. A good example is when Sonya took it upon herself to communicate, on an individual basis with every single child in grades 3-6 the need to improve their state assessment performance. Largely because of her extra efforts and the extra efforts of her teachers and students, the Glasgow district saw a dramatic improvement in Performance.
Sonya Fuemmeler’s primary goal has been to ensure that the district does not limit the quality of education based on economic restrictions, but with determination to make a school a positive experience for ALL STAKEHOLDERS, makes her deserving of Missouri’s Outstanding Rural Building Administrator for 2013.
